Changing a rugged phone's exterior can affect more than appearance. A new back cover, port opening, button or battery shape may change its sealing. An ODM project should review those changes before carrying over a retail model's IP68 claim.
List every opening and interface
Include charging ports, SIM tray, microphones, speakers, buttons and the display-to-housing bond in the drawing review. Mark which changes touch a sealing surface. A logo print may be cosmetic; a new molded cover or screw arrangement is an engineering change.
Agree on the evidence
Ask which final configuration will undergo ingress testing and what depth, duration and device state the report covers. Record the test sample's hardware revision and accessories. A report for the original enclosure is not automatically evidence for the customized one.
Check production and service
Define the assembly controls, final checks and action for a failed seal. Ask how replacement screens and covers are fitted and verified. Keep repair and warranty instructions consistent with the tested configuration so users know when protection can decrease.
Compare with a documented baseline
The Phonemax X5 page lists IP68 and cautions that wear, impact and incorrectly closed covers can reduce resistance. Use those facts as a baseline, then request fresh evidence for an altered ODM design. Approve the customized claim only when the final sample and its sealing details match the test record.
