Long-range thermal performance depends heavily on the lens. A narrow field of view may place more pixels on a distant target, while a wide view helps an operator scan a larger area. The correct choice depends on the search task.
Calculate the scene
Define target width and distance, then ask the supplier for native sensor resolution and horizontal field of view. Request an original sample image at a similar distance. Digital zoom enlarges the displayed pixels; it does not create new sensor detail.
Test finding and confirming
Time how long the operator takes to find a target while scanning, then whether the captured image contains enough detail for a colleague to confirm it. A narrow view may improve one part of that workflow and slow the other.
Record the decision
Keep detection, recognition and temperature measurement as separate acceptance criteria. Verify any advertised 500-meter claim for the exact phone, lens and conditions. If the task demands reliable distant identification, compare a dedicated thermal instrument as well as a phone.
