100m Thermal Claims: Detection Is Not Measurement

Seeing a thermal target at 100m does not establish that the camera can identify it or measure its temperature accurately at that distance. This page provides no model-specific evidence of a 100m detection or measurement range for a Phonemax handset.

State the decision the image must support

Separate noticing that an object is present, recognizing what kind of object it is, identifying relevant detail and measuring a defined surface. Ask the supplier which outcome its distance claim actually covers.

Define the 100m requirement

  • Target dimensions and the smallest feature that matters.
  • The required distinction from the background.
  • Exact camera, lens and image mode.
  • Conditions and distance-measurement method used in the supporting demonstration.
  • Separate evidence if a temperature reading is required.

Avoid a measurement error in the buying decision

FLIR notes that target size in the image and the pixels needed for the task constrain useful distance. A visible hot spot is therefore not, by itself, an accuracy report. Ask a qualified evaluator to assess any measurement-critical requirement against the device instructions and a suitable method.

Use the existing range guides for the broader topic

The supplier range-evidence guide covers documentation, while the target-size guide explains pixel coverage. This page addresses the specific error of treating a 100m detection claim as a 100m measurement capability.

Source and limit

FLIR: lens choice and useful target distance. The example principles do not certify any Phonemax detection range. No original range test is reported.
