Thermal sensor resolution is the number of samples in an infrared image. It can support finer detail, but a high pixel count alone does not establish that a distant fault will be recognizable or that temperature readings will be accurate.
Start with target size
Define the smallest object the user must identify and the normal viewing distance. Ask for the sensor's native resolution, lens field of view and any digital upscaling. A narrow view may show more detail on one target while making it harder to scan a wide area.
Separate detection and measurement
Detecting a warm area, recognizing a component and measuring its temperature are different tasks. Measurement requires attention to calibration, emissivity, reflection and stated accuracy. Request sample images from a comparable task and examine the original thermal data, not only a promotional composite.
Test in the field
Compare the candidate thermal phone with a known reference under the same distance and environmental conditions. Record what users can consistently identify. Choose the device for the inspection task rather than the largest advertised number.
