A 500 m Thermal Detection Claim: How to Test the Target

“Detection at 500 m” is incomplete without a target size, temperature contrast, optics and weather. Detection can mean that a warm object is visible as a few pixels; it does not necessarily mean the viewer can identify the object or measure it accurately.

Define the target

Write down its dimensions, expected background and the decision the operator must make. Request the stated lens field of view, native sensor resolution and the conditions under which the range was measured. Ask for the supplier's definition of detection, recognition and identification.

Control the trial

Measure the distance to a safe, known target. Record humidity, rain or haze, target contrast and the operator's view of the original image. Repeat at shorter distances to determine where identification becomes dependable.

Document the limit

If a Phonemax thermal phone is being considered, verify a 500 m figure against the exact model and test report. Do not present a general article headline as a specification or use a range claim to make a safety-critical decision without a task-specific validation.
