Phonemax R4 GT vs P20 Pro: Compact Carry or a Larger 5G Phone?

Phonemax R4 GT compact thermal rugged phone for comparison with Phonemax P20 Pro 5G thermal rugged phone

Choose the Phonemax R4 GT when pocket space and carry weight are the main constraints. Choose the P20 Pro when a larger display, higher listed battery capacity and 5G support matter more. Both current listings include integrated thermal imaging and a separate 20MP infrared night-vision camera.

The decision starts with how you use the whole phone during a working day. For the camera's sensitivity, field of view, measurement limits and export requirements, use our thermal imaging phone buying guide.

Choose R4 GT when the phone spends more time being carried

R4 GT is 204 g lighter than P20 Pro based on the listed weights. Its shorter, narrower body can be an advantage when the phone shares pocket or pouch space with other equipment.

Its smaller footprint comes with an 18.3 mm body thickness. Check all three dimensions against a holder or mount rather than using screen size alone.

A useful fit check is to mark out the published height and width, then allow for thickness, a case and the way you remove the device. That simple check can expose a carrying problem before you choose a phone around its camera features.

The 4.3-inch display suits a different routine from a larger screen. Consider how much time you spend checking an image or message and how much time you spend typing, reading forms or reviewing a detailed map.

Choose P20 Pro when the screen is a primary work surface

P20 Pro's 6.6-inch display offers more room for viewing maps, photographs and forms. It is the more relevant starting point when the device stays in your hand for substantial screen-based work.

That benefit comes with a 394 g listed weight and a larger body. Check it with the actual mount, bag or carrying position you intend to use.

Neither a larger display nor a higher-resolution main screen establishes better thermal-camera detail. Both phones list 256 × 192 thermal imaging. Keep screen comfort and thermal-camera requirements as separate decisions.

Compare the charging plan alongside battery capacity

P20 Pro lists a 10,000mAh battery and up to 66W wired charging. R4 GT lists 3200mAh and up to 18W wired charging.

Those specifications help you plan, but they do not establish how many hours either phone will last with your camera, navigation and network workload. Test the intended routine if battery reserve determines whether the phone is suitable.

For a deployment, confirm the supplied charger and cable, the available power source and the time allowed between uses. Listed charging power does not mean that power is maintained throughout every charging session.

R4 GT may suit brief checks with convenient access to charging. P20 Pro's higher listed capacity is worth considering when charging access is limited, while its size and weight still need to fit the job.

Make 4G or 5G a coverage decision

P20 Pro is the 5G option in this comparison. R4 GT lists 4G, 3G and 2G bands.

If a contract or application requires 5G connectivity, start by checking P20 Pro's exact bands and operator acceptance. If your work only requires supported 4G service, evaluate the R4 GT on that basis.

Frequency support alone does not establish activation, calling services or coverage everywhere you travel. Confirm the country, carrier, plan and selected device configuration. 5G is a communication feature; it does not increase the thermal detector's pixel count.

Both phones offer night vision alongside thermal imaging

P20 Pro should not be excluded from a night-vision shortlist simply because its name emphasizes thermal imaging. Its current listing includes a separate 20MP infrared night-vision camera, as does R4 GT.

If you need both outputs, request a relevant sample from each mode. The same camera megapixel label does not establish identical dark-scene performance.

For a purchase driven by measurement or reporting requirements, complete the thermal-camera evidence checks before deciding between the two phones.

Check the current single-phone price

At the USD storefront price check on 27 October 2026, available R4 GT single-phone configurations started at US$298 and P20 Pro at US$479, a difference of US$181.

R4 GT also has a two-phone bundle option. Compare single-phone configurations when assessing the difference, then confirm the selected variant, destination and checkout total. Prices, availability, taxes and delivery costs can change.

Use your main constraint to make the final choice

  • Carry space or weight comes first: start with R4 GT, then confirm the smaller screen and charging plan suit your routine.
  • Screen-based work and battery capacity come first: start with P20 Pro and check the larger body in your intended carrying setup.
  • 5G is required: check P20 Pro's network suitability with your operator.
  • A specific measurement or export function is required: verify that evidence before choosing either model.

Published by Phonemax, which sells both models. Product information and the USD price snapshot were checked on 27 October 2026. This is a specification-based comparison. It does not report independent runtime, charging-speed, night-vision or thermal-accuracy tests. Confirm the supplied software and hardware configuration before ordering.
