Phonemax at GITEX GLOBAL 2025: Where Rugged Hardware Meets the AI Agenda

GITEX GLOBAL 2025 opened at the Dubai World Trade Centre on 13 October. It was the 45th edition and the largest to date, with more than 6,800 exhibitors and 2,000 startups from 180 countries spread across two venues and over 40 halls.

Almost everything on the agenda was about AI. We arrived with rugged phones and tablets — hardware you can drop. That contrast turned out to be the most useful thing about the week.

Why a hardware brand belongs at an AI show

The gap between an AI pilot and an AI deployment is usually not the model. It is the last hundred metres: the device in the hand of the technician, the driver, the inspector, the warehouse picker.

A predictive maintenance system needs someone on site to capture the fault. A fleet platform needs a handset that survives the vehicle. A field service workflow needs a device that lasts the shift. Software teams at GITEX were rarely thinking about that layer — which is precisely why the conversations were worth having.

Rugged describes construction, not deployment fitness

Enterprise buyers ask sharper questions than retail buyers, but the same misconception appears. An IP68 rating and a MIL-STD-810H test result describe how a device was built and how it behaved in a defined laboratory sequence. Neither tells you whether it fits your deployment.

For a project rollout, the questions that actually matter are: what does the device have to do, for how many hours, in what environment, across which networks, and who repairs it when one fails in month eight?

What buyers in Dubai asked about

Seeing heat, in inspection and utilities. The Middle East has a large installed base of solar, HVAC and electrical infrastructure inspected in high ambient temperatures. The P20 Pro pairs 5G with an integrated thermal camera; the R4 GT delivers thermal imaging and night vision in a compact body for technicians who dislike carrying a large handset.

Night operations and accurate positioning. Security, logistics and site patrol work after dark. The X3 combines an infrared night vision camera with L1/L5 dual-band positioning — relevant where a job needs both low-light capture and a reliable fix.

Fleets crossing borders. This came up more here than at any other show. A GCC logistics operator may run one fleet across several countries. The M10 is the usual starting point because of its broad 4G band coverage — though band compatibility still needs checking market by market.

Shared devices and field data capture. Warehouse, port and inspection teams wanted screen area over pocketability, which points to the T1 industrial tablet. Note the listed configuration is the 6GB+128GB version without the Honeywell barcode scanner, so confirm first if integrated scanning is part of your workflow.

Heat and battery. Worth stating plainly for this region: high ambient temperature shortens real battery endurance. The P1 and P2 are built around a 6100mAh battery, but before comparing capacity figures ask how long the shift is, whether mid-shift charging exists, and whether GPS, thermal imaging or maximum brightness will run continuously. In 45°C conditions those factors dominate.

Limitations and what to know

• IP ratings are laboratory results. IP68 and IP69K describe a new, undamaged device under defined test conditions. A worn port cover or aged gasket changes the outcome.
• Thermal imaging is not a calibrated instrument. It helps locate temperature differences; it does not replace certified test equipment for compliance work.
• Heat is a real constraint. Sustained high ambient temperature affects battery endurance, charging behaviour and sustained processor performance on any phone, ours included.
• Band support is regional. Broad 4G coverage still requires verifying the exact variant against each market's operators before a multi-country rollout.
• This is a 2025 record. GITEX GLOBAL moves to Expo City Dubai for its December 2026 edition, and our product range has changed since October 2025. Do not read this as a current catalogue or as a guide to a later edition.
