A distant target occupies fewer pixels than a nearby target. This basic geometry explains why a thermal camera might reveal a large warm object while failing to show a smaller fault at the same distance.
Describe the smallest target
Record its width, height and expected distance. Ask for the camera's native sensor dimensions and field of view. The optical setup determines how much of the scene each pixel represents; a larger screen or digital zoom does not change that physical sampling.
Inspect sample images
Compare the same target at several measured distances and retain the unedited files. Note when it can be detected, when its shape is recognizable and when a technician can confidently act. These are separate thresholds.
Use the result to choose equipment
If distant, small objects are essential to the task, a phone may need different optics or a dedicated instrument. Ask the supplier for evidence from the exact model rather than generalizing a “500-meter” label across a product line.
