Thermal Dynamic Range: Test the Scene, Not the Label

A “high dynamic range” thermal-camera claim needs a defined scene and an observable result. Do not assume it means a wider temperature measurement range, higher radiometric bit depth or improved accuracy. This article does not verify a specific HDR function in a Phonemax handset.

Define what must remain visible

Describe the small thermal difference of interest and any much hotter or colder object likely to appear nearby. Ask the supplier which supported settings and output modes address that scene.

Use a controlled comparison

  1. Keep the main target and camera position consistent.
  2. Capture the target with the wider scene included.
  3. Compare an appropriate view of the target without the distracting hot or cold region.
  4. Retain original files, settings, scale information and any relevant readings.

Separate presentation from measurement

FLIR's image-adjustment guidance explains that automatic scaling can make different-temperature items look similar in separate views. A visually pleasing image is therefore not, by itself, a quantitative comparison. Use the actual device's instructions and measurement evidence for that separate task.

Decide on the result the buyer needs

Record whether the required detail remains interpretable, whether reviewers need fixed-scale comparisons and whether the supplied software supports that workflow. Do not invent a universal HDR score or a numerical performance gain.

For the separate raw-data question, see the 14-bit acquisition-and-export guide. This article focuses on scene contrast, not a promised output format.

Source and scope

FLIR: achieving a good thermal image. No original HDR comparison or Phonemax algorithm validation is reported.
