Can an IP68 rugged phone be safely treated as a “1.5-meter submersible phone”? Not automatically. A depth claim should come from the exact model’s current test conditions. The older version of this article presented 1.5 meters as a generic product specification, so it has been corrected.
What IP68 actually tells you
IP68 indicates a tested level of dust and water ingress protection, but the exact immersion depth and duration are set by the manufacturer’s test conditions. Buyers should not assume that every IP68 phone uses the same 1.5-meter test.
Current Phonemax reference: X5
The Phonemax X5 current product page lists IP68-rated water and dust resistance. Its water-resistance notice also states that protection is based on laboratory testing and that the phone is not designed for permanent underwater use, high-pressure water activities, diving or intentional long-term immersion.
Why “submersible” can be misleading
A phone can survive a laboratory immersion test without being intended for repeated underwater operation. Seals can also degrade with wear, impact or improper closure of protective covers.
What to verify before exposure to water
- Exact IP rating.
- Published depth and duration, if any.
- Port-cover and seal requirements.
- Warranty exclusions for liquid damage.
- Whether intentional underwater use is allowed.
Bottom line
Do not convert “IP68” into “1.5-meter submersible” unless the exact current product documentation says so. For the current X5, use the published IP68 claim and the manufacturer’s water-use limitations.
