Those two cheap, unglamorous items do more for the quality of thermal work than any case or mount, because they address the two things that actually ruin thermal images: no baseline to compare against, and a smeared lens producing a soft image nobody can interpret three weeks later. Beyond those, a 394 g rugged phone needs help being carried and mounted — not help surviving, which it already does.

Why thermal work changes the accessory list
For a general work phone the accessory question is about protection and power. For an inspection phone there is a third category that matters more than either: anything that improves the quality and interpretability of what you capture.
Thermal images are comparative by nature. A single image of a warm component means very little; the same image alongside an identical component at ambient means a great deal. And unlike a normal photograph, a bad thermal image often looks fine on a small screen at the time and reveals itself as useless when someone tries to act on it later.
So the accessories that earn their place are the ones that make the capture defensible.
The shortlist
1. A thermal reference target
The most useful and least purchased item in thermal work.
A reference target is simply an object of known, stable emissivity placed in the frame. It gives every image in a set a common anchor, which makes comparison across images — and across days — far more meaningful. Purpose-made targets exist; even a consistently used piece of matte electrical tape on a known surface is better than nothing, because matte tape has a high and predictable emissivity while bare metal does not.
This matters especially on this device. Emissivity compensation is not published for the P20 Pro, which means shiny metal, galvanised surfaces and glass will read misleadingly. A reference in frame does not fix that, but it tells the person reading the image later that something is off.
2. A microfibre lens cloth
Trivial and genuinely important. A thermal aperture smeared with fingerprints, dust or grease produces a soft, low-contrast image, and the small on-device screen hides it. You find out when the report is being written.
Keep a cloth with the phone, not in the van.
3. A vehicle mount
For multi-site inspection work — which is most P20 Pro use — a mount puts navigation and job data where you can see it and turns driving time into charging time. That second point matters more here than on a general work phone, because thermal capture and 5G are both heavy loads.
Verify fit before ordering. At 172.6 x 81 x 17.8 mm and 394 g the P20 Pro exceeds what many mounts are designed to hold. Check the stated jaw width and the weight rating; a mount that cannot hold 394 g securely on a rough road is worse than no mount.
4. A tempered-glass screen protector
The screen is the component that rugged construction addresses least, and on an inspection phone you are frequently reviewing images in bright sunlight where scratches scatter light and make assessment harder.
5. A heavy-duty charging cable
Braided, with reinforced strain relief. Keep one in the vehicle and one at base rather than carrying a single cable back and forth.
6. A holster or chest harness, if carried all shift
394 g is a real weight. Over an eight-hour inspection round, a chest harness or belt holster distributes it better than a pocket, and keeps the phone accessible for the frequent quick captures that make a triage device useful.
7. A power bank — conditionally
Battery capacity is not published for this model. Thermal capture and 5G are the two heaviest loads it carries. If your inspection days are long and away from a vehicle, supplementary power is reasonable here in a way it is not on a 6100 mAh device.
Measure your own drain first. If vehicle charging covers you, skip it.
What not to buy
Armour case. The device already carries rugged construction. A case adds bulk to an already large phone, complicates mounting, and can obstruct the camera array — including the thermal aperture, which is the one thing you cannot afford to block.
Clip-on lens attachments. Designed for standard phone cameras. They are not built around a thermal aperture and risk obstructing or reflecting into it.
Wireless charging pad. Wireless charging is not published for this model.
Anything claiming to improve thermal accuracy. No accessory adds calibration to a device that does not publish accuracy specifications. If you need measurement-grade output, that is an instrument purchase, not an accessory purchase.
The most valuable thing is not an accessory
A written capture protocol beats any purchase: same distance where possible, same time of day for repeat scans, always capture a normal photograph alongside the thermal image, always note ambient conditions and whether equipment was running.
Thermal images without context are close to worthless three weeks later, and no accessory fixes that.
Comparison: when the kit list signals a different device
If you are assembling a power kit for every day, the load may exceed the device. The Phonemax T1 at $299 carries 12,000 mAh with 18W charging for documentation-led work, though it has no thermal camera and the listed configuration includes no barcode scanner.
If 394 g in a harness is still too much, the Phonemax R4 GT at $298 provides thermal imaging and night vision at 190 g — less than half the weight — trading 5G and screen size.
If you rarely use thermal, the Phonemax P20 at $358 is the identical platform without it. Same body, same weight, same bands.
