1.5 m Submersion Phone OEM: Define the Water Test for the Final Design

For an OEM phone intended to withstand immersion at 1.5 m, write the desired condition into the project specification. “Waterproof” is too vague: water type, duration, device state and seal condition all change the meaning of a test. The final, sale-ready enclosure must be the one evaluated.

Turn the request into a testable requirement

State whether 1.5 m is measured from the water surface to the device's lowest point, how long the phone remains immersed and whether the test uses fresh water at a specified temperature. Define whether ports are closed, whether buttons are operated under water and what functions must work after the test. Do not extend a lab result to saltwater, chlorinated water or high-pressure cleaning without separate evidence.

Account for OEM changes

A custom back cover, logo insert, port design, speaker mesh or battery door can affect seals. Ask the supplier to show which components change from its standard model and whether the previous ingress report still applies. Obtain a report naming the final model and revision, and inspect production-intent samples for seal consistency. Put the report identifier and sample revision in the approved build record.

Compare the current retail reference correctly

The current Phonemax X5 listing states IP68-rated protection. That statement alone does not supply a 1.5 m depth, time, water type or OEM-version test result. Request the applicable X5 report if that model is proposed as a platform; otherwise treat the 1.5 m project requirement as open.

Approve only the tested configuration

1. Agree on depth, duration and pass/fail functions in the RFQ.
2. Match the report to the final housing and port-cover design.
3. Test production-intent samples and record any seal installation instructions.
4. Review changes to components or manufacturing before reusing the result for later orders.
