A thermal image depends on infrared energy reaching the sensor. At longer distances, rain, fog, humidity and a small target can reduce the contrast an operator sees. A quoted distance should therefore be treated as a test condition, not an everyday guarantee.
Compare two environments
Choose the same safe target and distance on a clear day and in the site's usual conditions. Keep device settings and operator position consistent. Note whether the task requires spotting a heat source, recognizing equipment or documenting a fault.
Watch the background
Sun-warmed surfaces, reflective materials and nearby hot equipment can complicate interpretation. A visible-light photo and location note can help someone reviewing the record. Do not interpret every bright thermal patch as a known temperature or fault.
Plan operating distance
Set a shorter working range when conditions are uncertain. Ask for sample images and lens details for the exact model under review. A pilot on the real site is more persuasive than repeating “500 m” in a purchasing brief.
