Long-range thermal viewing requires careful operator technique. Even when a heat source is visible, a phone screen may not provide enough information to identify it confidently.
Prepare the device
Use the exact lens and imaging mode approved for the task. Check battery, focus controls and a safe vantage point. Record the approximate distance and environmental conditions before interpreting the image.
Scan systematically
Move across the scene in overlapping sections and pause long enough to examine each area. Compare suspected targets with a visible-light view where possible. Reflections, sun-warmed surfaces and intervening objects can produce misleading patterns.
Escalate uncertain findings
Save the original thermal file and a contextual image. Mark the observation as “unconfirmed” until a closer inspection or suitable instrument verifies it. A range such as 500 m must be confirmed for the particular device and target; the checklist does not establish that every thermal phone can meet it.
