Can an IP68 phone be used for underwater photography at 1.5 meters? IP68 alone is not enough to make that assumption. The old version of this page treated underwater photography and a 1.5-meter depth as generic rugged-phone capabilities, so it has been rewritten around the actual limitations of water-resistance ratings.
IP68 is an ingress-protection rating
IP68 confirms a level of dust and water protection under manufacturer-defined test conditions. It does not automatically mean the phone is designed as an underwater camera.
Current X5 water-use notice
The Phonemax X5 current product page lists IP68 resistance and states that the phone is not designed for permanent underwater use, high-pressure water activities, diving or intentional long-term immersion.
Why underwater photography is riskier
Moving water, pressure changes, damaged seals, open port covers and repeated immersion can create conditions very different from a controlled laboratory test. Touchscreens and camera controls may also behave differently underwater.
Before taking a phone into water
- Read the exact immersion conditions.
- Close all protective covers.
- Do not charge while wet.
- Check warranty exclusions.
- Use dedicated underwater equipment when repeated immersion is required.
Bottom line
Do not interpret IP68 as permission for routine 1.5-meter underwater photography unless the exact current product documentation explicitly supports that use.
