Automotive Thermal Camera: Measurement Range versus Operating Temperature

A range written as “-40°C to +125°C” can describe the temperatures a camera is meant to measure, the environment where the device can operate, or a particular test setup. These are different specifications and must not be interchanged.

Identify the stated range

Ask the supplier to label measurement range, device operating temperature and storage temperature separately for the exact model. Request the accuracy statement and any calibration conditions. A camera that displays a hot target does not necessarily tolerate being placed in that hot environment.

Define the automotive task

Inspection of wiring, brakes or cabin components may require different target distances and temperature spans. Account for reflective metal, emissivity and recently operated parts. Follow safe working procedures and avoid treating a thermal image as a stand-alone diagnosis.

Validate the setup

Test against a suitable reference under controlled conditions and record the target, distance and ambient temperature. Use the result to judge whether the quoted range and accuracy fit the task; do not infer a universal capability from a headline.
