Phonemax at the 137th Canton Fair: Bringing 5G and Thermal Imaging to the Spring Session

The 137th Canton Fair ran from 15 April to 5 May 2025 in Guangzhou. Phase 1, which covers electronics and consumer information products, ran 15 to 19 April — that is the phase our category sits in, and where we spent the week talking to buyers.

A spring session built around advanced manufacturing

The organiser framed Phase 1 of the 137th session around advanced manufacturing, with electronics, new energy and intelligent manufacturing as headline themes. Across all three phases the fair filled roughly 1.55 million square metres, and the organiser reported over 43,000 participating companies across its online and offline platforms.

For a rugged device brand, that framing matters. Buyers walking Phase 1 were not browsing consumer handsets. They arrived with a deployment in mind: an inspection team, a logistics fleet, a utilities contract.

The question behind almost every conversation

Very few buyers opened with a model number. Most opened with a failure: our technicians keep destroying ordinary phones, or the tablets die before the shift ends.

That reframes what a spec sheet is for. An IP68 rating and a MIL-STD-810H result describe how a device was built and how it behaved in a defined laboratory sequence. They do not tell you whether it suits your job. Two devices can share the same protection rating and still fail different tasks.

So the useful sequence at a trade fair is to fix the role first, then pick the model.

What we showed in spring

The P20 platform. Spring was the session where the 5G line drew the most questions. The P20 Pro pairs 5G with an integrated thermal camera; the P20 is the same 5G platform without the thermal camera, which suited buyers who needed the network performance but had no thermal use case and did not want to pay for one.

Compact thermal. The R4 GT consistently stopped people at the counter, mostly because buyers did not expect thermal imaging and night vision in a body that small.

Night vision with precise positioning. The X3 combines an infrared night vision camera with L1/L5 dual-band positioning — relevant when a job needs both low-light capture and an accurate fix.

Screen area over pocketability. Inspection teams recording findings on site gravitated to the T1 industrial tablet, where a larger display makes annotated reports and thermal captures easier to review before leaving the site.

Thermal or night vision? They are not interchangeable

This came up often enough in spring to be worth stating plainly. Thermal imaging detects heat differences and works in total darkness — useful for electrical faults, overheating bearings and insulation gaps. Night vision amplifies available light, including infrared illumination, and shows you a scene rather than a heat map.

An inspector chasing a hot joint needs the first. A patrol officer identifying what moved in the dark needs the second. Buying the wrong one because both are labelled "sees in the dark" is a common and expensive mistake.

Limits of thermal and rugged claims

• IP ratings are laboratory results. IP68 and IP69K describe a new, undamaged device under defined test conditions. A worn port cover or aged gasket changes the outcome.
• Thermal imaging is not a calibrated instrument. It helps you find temperature differences; it does not replace certified test equipment for compliance work.
• Battery capacity is not a runtime promise. Continuous GPS, thermal use, high brightness and cold weather all shorten real endurance.
• Band support is regional. Confirm the exact variant against your operator's bands before a fleet order.
• This covers the spring session only. Our autumn line-up at the 138th session differed. Do not read this as the schedule or catalogue for any later fair.

What is the difference between the P20 and the P20 Pro?
Both are 5G rugged phones on the same platform. The P20 Pro adds an integrated thermal camera; the P20 does not have one.

Is thermal imaging the same as night vision?
No. Thermal imaging detects heat differences and works in complete darkness. Night vision amplifies available light and needs some illumination, including infrared. They solve different problems.
