Buying an IP68 Phone: Questions Behind a 1.5-Meter Water Claim

A 1.5-meter water claim needs a duration, test setup and exact model reference before it can be used as a buying requirement. IP68 alone does not tell a buyer every condition of an immersion test. Ask for the documented conditions rather than treating the number as permission for unrestricted underwater use.

Put the missing conditions into the supplier enquiry

Detail What should be explicit
Model and revision The exact hardware offered for delivery
Depth and duration The stated exposure and how depth was defined
Water and temperature The test medium and relevant conditions
Phone configuration Closure requirements, accessories and whether it was operating
Result Acceptance criteria and checks after the test

The IEC 60529 publication sets out the enclosure-protection classification framework. Its listing is not evidence that a selected Phonemax model has passed a 1.5-meter test. This article does not assert such a result.

Explain the water exposure you actually expect

Rain during deliveries, accidental immersion and a cleaning process are different situations. Describe which one matters to the purchase. Do not transfer a result from one test into a promise about pressure washing, chemicals, salt water or repeated immersion unless the relevant evidence explicitly supports it.

If work requires the camera or touchscreen to operate in water, make that a separate question. Enclosure protection does not establish the usability of every control during immersion.

Agree the documentation before approving the sample

  1. Identify the model, configuration and intended exposure in the request.
  2. Review the supplied report and instructions for inconsistencies.
  3. Resolve gaps with the supplier before using the claim in purchasing documents.
  4. Keep the approved specification with the order and verify that the delivered configuration matches it.

Do not use a casual sink test as a substitute for documented qualification. Follow the selected phone's instructions after wet exposure and before charging, and seek advice if covers or the housing are damaged.

What about warranty coverage?

Protection evidence and order terms answer different questions. Request the applicable terms for the selected configuration without assuming every liquid-related event is covered. Contact Phonemax with the model, exposure and required supporting documents so the evidence can be reviewed before purchase.
