IP68 vs Explosion Protection: Refinery Phone Checklist

IP68 is not evidence that a phone is approved for hazardous oil-refinery zones. This page does not provide a model-specific explosion-protection certificate or site-use approval for a Phonemax handset. Do not use its title as a procurement specification or permission to take a phone into a classified area.

Start with the work location

Ask the refinery's responsible safety team to define the equipment requirements for the actual location and task. Do not infer hazardous-area suitability from the industry name, enclosure appearance or an ingress-protection label.

Use separate approval records

Why an IP record cannot replace the other checks

IEC 60529 addresses degrees of protection provided by enclosures. ATEX addresses equipment intended for potentially explosive atmospheres in the EU. These have different scopes; satisfying an ingress requirement does not answer the hazardous-area question.

Resolve substitutions before deployment

If a replacement handset, battery or accessory differs from the approved configuration, refer it back to the responsible safety team. Do not assume a similar product name or higher IP rating makes it an acceptable substitute.
